Ignitas newly hired advisor Maja Hvammen Adriaensen represented Ignitas and other Norwegian startup initiatives at EYIF Conference at the European Parliament, 13th April. The conference ”Transforming Ideas to Action, Roadmap 2011 – 2012” was focused on outlining the shared-risk collaborative approach between Europe and its young people to building and sustaining Europe’s ‘Innovation Capacity’ by Empowering Young Innovators and Potential Innovators to engage in a significant, transformative role in Europe’s innovation renewal.

The conference speakers stated how young Europeans through significant citizen driven bottom-up and top-down EU initiatives can facilitate Shared Risk, Full Lifecycle EU innovation, aiming to encourage young people to engage fully in the process of turning ideas into jobs, sustainable growth and social progress to enable Europe’s innovation renewal. Judith Merkies, MEP and European Parliament Rapporteur for the ‘Innovation Union’ well underlined the importance of innovation-focus in Europe; “Forget about being pampered, Things aren’t going to be that easy anymore. Innovate or else!”

Ignitas’ managing partner Steinar Svalesen has been appointed chariman of the jury for Oslo Startup Weekend January 28. -30. 2011. The Oslo Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event focusing on building web- or mobile applications with corresponding business models. The hands-on event may provide the basis for final products and commercial pilots ready for launch. Participants typically have backgrounds from areas such as programming, graphic design, and marketing.  Coupled with business experience from the event coaches the event focuses on unlocking and identifying true business potential.

Startup Weekends are specifically designed for entrepreneurs looking for feedback on an idea, are interested in finding a co-founder, would like to learn a new skill, or would like to test the entrepreneurial waters by joining a team.

Tor Grønsund on lean product and customer development for startups This fall Ignitas Advisor Tor Grønsund is joining the University of Oslo as Assistant Professor in entrepreneurship. Tor will be responsible for teaching and developing an interdisciplinary course in entrepreneurship that is practically as well as theoretically focused, and based on hands-on “startup methodology” the course invites students to take on real-life projects.

Tor has been an early advocate of the Customer Development and Lean Startup methodologies, and his coursework on using lean approaches to business model development was recently assigned reading at Stanford University. Its premise is that startups are not smaller versions of large companies. Instead, startups need their own tools. The methodology leverages the web in creation of rapid prototypes for testing market assumptions, and use customer feedback to develop them much faster than compared to traditional management practices. With the emergence of open source platforms and web technologies such as cloud services, search marketing and social media collaboration, launching a venture today is cheaper. Ignitas has taken a stake in Exerto and has also been appointed as advisors to the company. Exerto specialises in creating professional fitness training exercise sessions distributed as online videos, giving people the possbility to exercise in the comfort of their home, or in other places than the urban gym environment. Exerto currently boasts more than 100 training videos in 15+ categories like spinning, aerobics, dance, martial arts, and more. In addition to advising Exerto on their strategy Ignitas will advice the company on partnership deals, distribution of their services, business development and capitalisation.
